Hardware Setup Guide

Using Tpad with 'hard' phones and mobiles

The Tpad service can be used with any SIP compatible hardware device as long as it is configured to Tpad. Most people use Tpad with a Softphone and headset. However, the following categories of 'hard' phones can be used and are each covered in detail on the relevant pages. Thus you can use Tpad without turning your PC on, as these devices link directly to the internet via your router or other means.

IP Phones

These look like normal desk phones but plug using a network (RJ45 connector) into your broadband/ ADSL router. Full details are in the IP Phones section with setup guides for some popular models. Models are also available based on DECT technology.

ATA Adaptors

There are small adaptors into which you can plug-in you existing normal desk phone or Dect phone. The other end of the ATA adaptor plugs into your broadband ADSL router. It basically converts your normal phone into an IP phone. See the ATA Adaptors section.

Mobile Phones

Mobile phones may use WiFi and connect to your Internet or they may use the Data Network (like 3G) and thus do not need your Internet connection. Call quality over mobile data networks is still not very good but it is improving. Several models are available.
-SIP mobile phones allow you to easily configure the settings to use with Tpad
-Other phones may need to download a special application to work with SIP or Tpad.
See Mobile Phones section.

'Soft' phones running on a PC with a headset can also be used; and in-fact are used by most people instead of 'hard' phones. These are covered in detail in the Softphone menu

Setting Up Tpad

Most such devices need to be configured. The normal way of doing this is via a menu on the phone or via a web based menu that appear when the IP address of the phone is typed into a web browser.

Just like Softphones you will need to amend the Settings to the following. You do not need to do this if a phone has already been set up for you. Exact descriptions may vary with phone type and not all of these may be requested in the menu. See the individual section on IP phones and Mobile Phones. Normally you leave most things as default and just enter server addresses (sip.tpad.com), Tpad Number and Password in relevant places.
